Vinyl Album World - calling all collectors

If you're reading this blog, there's a good chance you are a collector of cover version records. If so, you will be able to help out with one of the most ambitious cataloging projects ever undertaken.

The website Vinyl Album World has recently been set up to make a permanent record of every (!) vinyl LP ever released in the world, complete with cover photos (front and back) and label scans. It's an incredible idea, and was set up as an open, collaborative project which anyone can help with.

My own pet area (unsurprisingly) is Top of the Pops and other such LPs, which I am currently in the early stages of uploading to the site. There are, of course, hundreds of them, and a huge amount of work is needed. I think it's worth it - in the end there will be a fantastic catalogue of genre releases, preserved for all time, and minutiae such as label varieties etc are bound to show up.

And you can help - if you have a scanner or camera, or just a copy of the LP to refer to (you can add new records without photos), then you can set up a free account and start contributing. Please do!

The site has a preferred format for record label scans, although you can upload imperfect scans and someone will clean them up for the site. Here are some of my recent scans - some of the Israeli Top of the Pops labels:
