Another coloured Pye LP

We have recently been looking at the hidden colours in Pye's vinyl pressings of the 1970s. Earlier we posted about the Pye Chart Busters series, and how all the editions turned out to be colured rather than plain old black. What we didn't check was the peripheral release - the end-of-year compilation, "Chartbusters 1972".

Well, someone who did think to check was Holger Schoeler, who sent us the following images, proving his copy is, indeed, on a sort of purple vinyl...

When I read about this, I dug out my own copy, and sure enough, it's a very strong cherry red colour.

Which gave me another thought - the previous year's "Chartbusters of the Year '71", which I checked and which is also on a kind of purple vinyl. Like "Chartbusters 1972" it was issued in Pye's Golden Hour series.

Thanks again to Holger for flagging this up.

Another coloured vinyl from "12 Tops"

A break from our ongoing series of one-off releases. (Yesterday was the blog's fourth birthday, by the way - yay!)

This post comes courtesy of Holger Schoeler. A couple of weeks ago we reported on the discovery that many of the "12 Tops" albums were pressed on Pye's little-known coloured vinyl formulation. The earliest we had proof of was volume 3 - but Holger has turned up a copy of volume 1 on what he describes as 'violet'.

Here are the images, and we must say he's done a better job than we did with the photography! Volume 1 duly added to the list. Let us know if you have any more...

Here's the updated list of confirmed coloured editions:
  • Volume 1
  • Volume 3
  • Volume 4
  • Volume 5
  • Volume 6
  • Volume 7
  • Volume 10
  • Volume 15
  • Volume 17

12 Tops - more 'colured vinyl' discovered!

We recently posted on the subject of coloured vinyl editions of Pye Chartbusters, a discovery made after years of assuming they were all ordinary black pressings. Now, thanks to a tip-off from blog regular, Bro19, we have learned that these were not the only such editions in the world of anonymous cover versions.

According to Bro19, the 12 Tops series got the same treatment - so we dug our our set and duly did the 'torch test' on the playing area. What we found is a little confusing, and we suspect there are multiple editions of some (if not all) of these, doing the rounds.

The coloured editions are essentially of the same nature as the Pye Chartbusters albums - very dark, but allowing light to shine through either very dark red, or in some cases, untinted. Here are a couple of 12 Tops LPs, held up to the light:

Using the torch, we can see the tinting at close quarters:

From what we previously knew, it would be fair to assume that the coloured editions were all made by Pye, this being something of a secret trademark. However, 12 Tops sometimes stated "Manufactured by Pye Records" on the labels, and so one would expect these to all have the colouring.

Not so. Just to confuse us, some of the Pye pressings are regular opaque black (unlike the Pye Chartbusters which are all coloured), while a few of the non-Pye pressings are coloured. That's if the print on the label is anything to go by...

Below are example label details from volume 7 (erroneously labeled as volume 6, but that's another story). The non-Pye copy ("Made in England") has a deep cherry red tint to the vinyl, while the Pye pressing is completely opaque.

Examples like these show that there are different types of pressing in existence. When we went through out collection, we similarly found both types for volumes 5 and 10. Others we had no coloured editions at all, but that's not to say they don't exist. Here's a list of the coloured editions we have:

  • Volume 3
  • Volume 4
  • Volume 5
  • Volume 6
  • Volume 7
  • Volume 10
  • Volume 15
  • Volume 17
  • Volume 19
  • Volume 21
  • Volume 22
  • Volume 25
  • Volume 27

Let us know if you have any missing from the list, and we'll add them to our database.

Pye Chartbusters - they're all on coloured vinyl!

Playing a couple of budget LPs a few days back, something caught my eye. With the sun streaming in through the window, as I picked up a copy of one of the Pye Chartbusters LPs, I noticed the light was shining through it. Holding it against the window, it was obvious that the vinyl was not the traditional opaque black variety, but a very dark, translucent red.

Coloured vinyl, if you will. Who knew?? Was this a freak pressing? Or a one-off?

This warranted further investigation. What I discovered amazed me, not least for the fact that I'd owned a full set of these for years and never even noticed. The fact is, the entire series was issued on this coloured vinyl!

The colour is not the same on every edition. Some are deep red, some a bluey colour, and one 'clear' (if that makes any sense, considering it's really black!). Capturing photos proved difficult. I held some samples up to the sun and photographed the results, but the range of colours was not truly captured. Enter, my trusty torch:

This torch is ideal for picking out colour, as the LED arrangement produces a pure white light. By shining this directly through the LPs, I was able to better capture their true colours.

Below are five sample albums, which between them give a pretty good indication of what we're dealing with here:

1. Pye Chartbusters volume 2 - As the torch reveals, the actual colouring of this LP is a sort of cherry red...

2. Pye Charbusters volume 3 - This one is somewhat pinky. Close examination shows that there are flecks of dark colouring in the vinyl (if it actually is vinyl), a couple of which are evident in the close-up image:

3. Pye Charbuster Hits volume 11 - This one is deceptive. The standard photo shows it to have a slightly blue tinge, but this is not how it really looks. In fact the light shines through very blue indeed. Again, there's a fleck of blue dye visible in the close-up, suggesting that colouring was mixed into the vinyl formulation.

4. Pye Charbuster Hits volume 13 - This is the one I'm paradoxically calling 'clear'. Maybe colourless would be a better term? In any case, when white light comes through the playing surface, it appears pure and untinted:

4. Pye Charbuster Hits volume 16 - This very late edition has a mixture of blues and pinks. It may be possible to discern in the torch shot that the colouring is not consistent across the disc, some regions being redder and some bluer.

As you can see, this phenomenon spans the length of the series. Some Googling has revealed that collectors elsewhere have noticed this feature before in records pressed by Pye. It's not widely known but seems to be something to do with the material Pye used when manufacturing their LPs. Indeed, some collectors chancing upon Pye pressings have sometimes thought they'd struck gold with previously undocumented coloured vinyl editions of classic albums.

The odd thing is, under normal circumstances, they appear to be regular black editions, which I guess they are. Or are they? I'm not sure! In any case, a surprising thing to find after all these years. I wonder how many more are out there, waiting to be discovered?

Copycat ... er ... Covers - part 5

Another installment of our ongoing series of blog posts, bringing together cover version and budget LP sleeves which resemble other cover version LPs. We'll kick off this selection with some overseas albums using similar artwork to our own UK covers LPs...

First up, the Boulevard LP, "16 Hit Songs", which is in fact volume 1 of what would become Flag's "World Top 12" series. Below are four annual releases from the US, rounding up cover versions of summer hits. Notice how on the fourth they have simply discarded the cover model!

Next, to Stereo Gold Award's "12 Tops" series. The cover of volume 8 featured a model who would shortly turn up on the front of the German album, Tanz-Party 2 - the photo is from the same session:

"12 Chart Buster Hits" volume 15 was issued in the UK by Pye around Easter 1975. Probably around the same time, volume 4 of "Special Disco Party" was released in Israel, with the same photo on the front:

Next up is Rediffusion's "Hit Parade Special" volume 8. There are two overseas albums with similar photos. The first is the German LP, "Amarillo", the second an Australian album called "The Hits of Simon & Garfunkel", which we've featured before in this series, but which is worth juxtaposing with the other two; the photo has been flipped over:

Another one we've seen before is the Israeli album below left, which has a similar cover photo to that used on Contour's "16 Chart Hits" volume 10. We're re-running it here as we've found a third: "Top Hit Famous Theme From Films", which we believe is an Italian release.

...which leads us nicely onto the UK/UK examples below, the first of which features another photo from the session. Here, the model's swapped her hat for a fag. (No chance that would be allowed these days!)

The rest of these don't need much introduction. They are all UK albums with similar or identical photographs on the covers...

Check back here for another installment in a few days' time...
