Those coloured vinyl EPs from Avenue - new images

A week ago we featured some info on coloured vinyl Forest and Avenue EPs from Holger Schoeler (see here). Holger has kindly sent us some scans - quite striking they are, too.

So without further comment, here they are:

Avenue - more on the coloured vinyls

Record collector, Holger Schoeler, has been in touch on the subject of the Avenue label and its coloured vinyl pressings

Holger has checked his own copies and reports that several other records, not on our initial listing, were pressed on this same dark, translucent material. Among them are AVE 056 and AVE 072, which are Avenue's (ie Alan Caddy's) tribute albums to Engelbert Humperdinck and Andy Williams respectively.

And from the main series, the album numbered AVE 0101 was also issued with this same deep red tint - although not in all cases, as my jet-black copy proves. Here's Holger's copy though:

We can therefore add this to our list of regular Avenue covers albums in coloured vinyl:
  • AVE 082
  • AVE 088
  • AVE 092
  • AVE 097
  • AVE 0101
  • AVE 0102
  • AVE 0104
  • AVE 0109
  • AVE 0129
And what's more, Holger has added some EPs to our list. We previously knew of five Avenue/Forest EPs of this type. We can now add the following to the list of confirmed examples from the Avenue label:
  • EVA 2001
  • EVA 2013
...and also NUE 140 ("Tribute to Beatlemania") plus the Japanese EP, ARD M003.

Keep 'em coming, popsters!

And the colours keep on coming...

Our recent discoveries that editions of both Pye Chartbusters and 12 Tops exist on coloured vinyl - which can only be seen when held up to the light - prompted blog reader, Clive Hetherington, to contact us with further info. What Clive had spotted, but we had not, is that several of the Avenue albums and EPs are of the same nature.

We duly dug out our vinyl and did some examination, discovering that in the collection of your blog-master, there are no fewer than eight Avenue albums and five EPs which all appear to be on deep cherry red vinyl. Here are a few examples, held up to the sun by my budget LP assistant, 6-year-old Archie:

The bottom one is of course a 7-inch EP.

Putting together a listing isn't easy. Although I have all the albums in question, some of mine are red, and some black (eg my copy of AVE 088 is red, the next, AVE 089, isn't, and then the next, AVE 092 is). Added to that are a few gaps in my EP collection which make it impossible to check them all.

For the record though, the following albums I can confirm red pressings for (Avenue didn't give them volume numbers, so we're stuck with the cat numbers for a point of reference): AVE 082; AVE 088; AVE 092; AVE 097; AVE 0102; AVE 0104; AVE 0109; AVE 0129.

These albums span the period mid-1971 to late-1972. All those before and after are conventional black pressings.

Lists are dull - here are some cover scans of the coloured editions in my set:

And so to the EPs...

The ones I have on red vinyl are: NUE 157; NUE 159; NUE 165 - and after the EPs were switched to the Forest label - FVA 2021 and FVA 2024. No surprise that these cover the same time period as the albums. I have checked many of the intervening cat numbers too, only to discover ordinary black vinyl.

Again, here are the sleeves for added interest:

Thanks to Clive for the heads-up.

I won't be at all surprised if and when more such examples are found. The most amazing thing to me is that this whole affair has slipped under the radar for so long!

Forest EP

I was pleased to add the EP below to my collection. Although by no means one of the holy grails of budget records, it is nevertheless pretty rare, and forms part of a short-lived series of EPs on the Forest label.

The Forest label was introduced by Avenue in April 1972, as a way of re-launching and revitalising Avenue's 7-inch offer, which dated back to 1967. Typically the Avenue EPs would contain half of one of the label's LPs, and were accordingly issued in pairs more often than not - a formula which Forest naturally continued with.

This EP is from the Avenue album released in Summer 1972, and contains 50 percent of the LP. It is not clear why a partner EP was not also released, with the remaining six tracks on, but such are the mysteries of the Avenue discography. Below is the cover of the parent LP:

The EP is catalogue numbered FVA 2023, and is the seventh of nine Forest EPs released in 1972-73 containing soundalike cover versions. Below is the full Forest discography (cover versions only), with the approximate release dates given along with the lead track on each disc:

  • 4/72     EVA 2001       Telegram Sam
  • 4/72     EVA 2013       Look Wot You Dun
  • 4/73     FVA 2016       Beg, Steal Or Borrow
  • 4/73     FVA 2017       Desiderata
  • 5/73     FVA 2020       Tumbling Dice
  • 5/73     FVA 2021       Open Up
  • 7/73     FVA 2023       Circles
  • 9/73     FVA 2024       Pop Corn
  • 9/73     FVA 2030       Love Theme From The Godfather

The Forest EPs had better quality picture sleeves than the Avenue EPs they replaced, and the cover model on this particular example is familiar to us; it's LP sleeve regular, Susy Shaw, of course. Susy would soon appear on the front of one of Avenue's LPs as well, in a similar pose:
